Free Idea # 318 - Barcode car license plates

Make car license plates that are just big bar codes, then give traffic cops powerful long-range 'bar code reader guns' so they can shoot license plates as they drive around and find stolen cars, bad guys with outstanding arrest warrants, etc.

Free Idea # 314 - In-built tracking system at car components

Install, as standard, a resilient in-built tracking system in the engine, body, wheels, and other key components of every car, such that a cell phone or computer could track individual parts of the vehicle separately. This would allow the police, or an organization specifically created to track down stolen cars, to find them even after they have been abandoned, dismantled, torched, or crushed.

Free Idea # 312 - Collision warning system for cars and trucks

Create a collision warning system for cars and trucks. The sensor would measure its speed relative to objects in front of it and alert the driver of a possible crash. The sensor would even send an audible alert through in-car audio speakers and/or to the driver's cell phone (if one or both were being used).

Free Idea # 301 - Place gymnastic matting under carpet

Place gymnastic matting under carpets in the homes of older
people who tend to fall down and break bones more easily.
Then, when they fall, they would be more likely to have a
soft landing.

Free Idea # 292 - High quality 3D CCTV

Fight crime by obtaining high quality (even 3D) images of law
breakers by creating a computer program that tracks faces
across each frame of CCTV to produce a composite image
instead of a simple fuzzy freeze-frame snapshot.

Free Idea # 274 - Drinking straw with a detector strip

Invent a drinking straw with a detector strip down the side
that would indicate whether a drink contains any illegal
substances. Straws would be given out with drinks at bars,
pubs, and clubs to promote customer safety and highlight
the problem of drink spiking. If found positive the straw could
later be used as evidence, as some substances used to spike
drinks leave the body very quickly and can be difficult to
test for.

Free Idea # 267 - Idea to make beach a safer place

Give a discount on parking to all beach-goers who can prove
lifeguard certification and are prepared to wear a high-visibility
sash, wristband, or hat, and are willing to save lives when called
upon. This would take a little pressure off the designated
lifeguards and make the beach a safer place for all.

Free Idea # 266 - Cell phones with mini airbags

Fit cell phones with mini airbags. A gyroscopic sensor would
deploy the bags in the event of freefall
(e.g. being dropped accidentally) or sudden flight.

Free Idea # 259 - Emergency GPS tracking system in mobile phones

Include as standard an 'I am in immediate danger' alarm and
GPS tracking system in all mobile phones, launched in 2007.
If threatened or attacked, the user would simply press an
easy-to-locate button on the phone a few times in quick
succession to send an automated emergency text
(including GPS data) to friends and relatives who would
then alert the police.

Free Idea # 256 - ATM emergency pin number

Issue all ATM users with an additional 'emergency' pin number
which, when entered, would immediately and silently alert the
police.

Free Idea # 253 - Paper shredders with multiple bins

Develop paper shredders that would automatically split shredding
between two or more bins. Users could empty each bin at different
times or in different places, reducing the chance of a fraudster being
able to recover a complete bank statement or other confidential
document.

Free Idea # 245 - Color-code road surfaces

Color-code road surfaces to warn of imminent bends, turns, concealed
intersections, etc. The sudden change in the color of the road - running
for one kilometer up to the potential hazard - would indicate what lies
ahead and, by so doing, would encourage drivers to pay due care and
attention. This innovation should reduce the number of accidents and
other mishaps.

Free Idea # 235 - GPS tags in ski garments

Install GPS tags in ski lift passes and ski garments to assist
rescue workers in finding people trapped in an avalanche.

Free Idea # 232 - Protection for shoulder bags

Insert strong slender metal cables in the straps of purses,
rucksacks and shoulder bags to prevent muggers cutting or
breaking them. Anti-theft straps could also include sensors
that would sound an alarm in the event of external
interference or violent struggle.

Free Idea # 230 - Aerosols with klaxon sound

Produce small aerosols that would release fire suppressing
pepper spray and simultaneously sound a klaxon. As well as
extinguishing small fires and alerting others to danger, they could be used to temporarily blind and deafen criminals.

Free Idea # 229 - Mirror at back bumper of car

Incorporate a mirror into the back bumper of a car, angled so
it would reflect only the un-dipped main beam headlights of the
vehicle behind. This would encourage and remind forgetful and
selfish drivers not to rear dazzle fellow motorists. The mirror's
reflection could be muted so as to avoid accidents.

Free Idea # 221 - Place deep moats around skyscrapers

Place deep moats around skyscrapers so that in the event of fire
or terrorist attack, those jumping from the upper stories stand
a chance of surviving.

Free Idea # 213 - Hand glove cooking proctection

Design a hand glove that protects the hands from burns when
cooking in a restaurant kitchen. The glove would be thin and
almost invisible so that it wouldn't affect a chef's fine detail but
would help prevent annoying little burns.

Free Idea # 200 - CCTV security cameras

Place a foot operated floor switch in places where there are
CCTV security cameras so that the picture quality and frames
per second can be enhanced immediately and other cameras
brought into operation should a robbery or attack occur.

Free Idea # 170 - Reminder on drive dangerously

Display smashed up cars on white pedestals on
the side of the highway as a reminder of what
can happen when people drive dangerously.
